I contain multitudes

I contain multitudes
from the heart of Europe
to North Africa
to the seashores
of the carribbean

I descend from Kings and Queens
I descend from Warriors
I live through my ancestors
and my ancestors live through me
their pain and their strength
flows through my veins

I contain multitudes
and follow them
on the path of beauty

And I get closer to Spirit
when I dance, I dance
I got a lot on my mind
so I dance, I dance
to the song in my heart
for this is how we survive

Getting closer to God
I got a lot on my mind

with their spirits in me

The fire that rises
from our oppression
courses in our veins
and becomes a blessing
when it has passed
through the furnace of dance
and over the anvil of song

And though I am but one person
I contain multitudes
I contain two
within me
their two spirits live in harmony
just as the masculine and feminine
are in harmony within
my maleness
